The courtyard is the open space within the Komturei grounds. Even now, a diverse mix of flowers, grasses, and shrubs thrives here. In the future, this valuable green and living space will be enriched with native plants, permeable pathways and plazas, and fruit trees. The existing landscape is seen as a continuation of its history—preserved, cared for, and thoughtfully integrated into new developments. Pedestrians and slow-moving traffic, such as bicycles and local delivery services, are welcome to pass through. Above all, the courtyard is designed to be a safe, quiet gathering space for children, residents, and visitors—benefiting both people and nature alike.

Covered parking for bicycles and cars, along with charging stations, is planned at the southern gate. Thanks to its generous layout, the courtyard balances private outdoor spaces with communal areas. Thoughtful landscape design responds to these varied needs, while the buildings themselves offer intimate retreats through balconies, terraces, and garden rooms.
The space also holds potential for temporary pop-up restaurants, open-air cinema, and other
cultural events — creating opportunities for both locals and visitors to connect. Our open-space concept is rooted in the unique ecology of the Altmark region, enhancing habitats for native plants and wildlife through targeted interventions. At the same time, it respects the site’s historical legacy, ensuring that modern uses and heritage blend seamlessly. The Komturei serves as a model project for the careful and sustainable revitalization of vacant spaces in rural areas.
