The Landschaftsmetropole project envisions a transformative approach to food production and consumption in the Stuttgart metropolitan region, fostering a harmonious coexistence between urban and rural life, people, animals, and plants. By integrating local agriculture with innovative technologies and community engagement, the project aspires to reshape the region's ecological footprint and food systems.

The initiative is structured around three key components. The first involves the development of farm shops for local organic farms. These shops will serve as direct sales points, enabling producers to economically offer fresh, seasonal products to the community. To enhance accessibility, a complementary digital app will connect residents with nearby organic farms. This app will function as a directory, providing information about available products and their locations, making it easy for consumers to plan their purchases and support local agriculture.

The second pillar of the project introduces vertical food farms along motorways. These high-tech agricultural facilities will produce local food directly on already sealed road surfaces, avoiding additional land use. By leveraging the proximity to vehicle emissions, the plants can convert carbon dioxide into oxygen through photosynthesis, creating a closed-loop system that addresses both food production and environmental concerns. This innovative use of infrastructure underscores the project’s commitment to sustainability and resource efficiency.

Lastly, Landschaftsmetropole incorporates a mobile event venue designed to educate and engage the public. Workshops, lectures, and culinary demonstrations will encourage healthier, more ecological dietary habits while promoting vegetarian, seasonal, and locally sourced food. Events will be held at various locations across the Stuttgart region, such as marketplaces, where participants can enjoy meals, attend discussions on sustainable food practices, and experience cultural activities like concerts.

Landschaftsmetropole is part of the IBA'27 Stuttgart network.
