la piccola luna is a hydrogen-filled balloon. The balloon hovers above the town and is tethered to several points at different locations by ropes. Suspended from the balloon is a transport basket. One of these attachment points is a public parking lot or bus stop, while the others are distributed across the town.

Residents can, upon arriving at the parking lot or bus stop, pull the basket down using the rope and fill it with whatever they want to take home—for example, their daily groceries. As they walk home, the balloon rises again with the load. Once they reach their house, they simply pull the balloon back down with a second rope and remove the items.

Alessio Panunzi, known above all for his work in the corporate, institutional, and editorial fields, accompanied Signore Tonino and his horse Ercole along their daily waste-collection route. Andrea Benedetti is, among other things, specialized in wildlife photography. In Olevano, he used high resolution and a powerful zoom to
observe la piccola luna above the town from different perspectives with his video camera. Tonino Lenda has been collecting and transporting garbage with his horse in Olevano since February 2009. The horse’s official name is Fulmine; however, Tonino calls it Ercole.

The project was part of the Casa Baldi Fellowship at the German Academy Rome Villa Massimo.
